West Highland White Terriers (often called Westies) were considered to be one breed with Dandie Dinmont, Skye, Cairn and Scottish Terriers. These breeds share their roots, but selective breeding based on coat type and color was isolated on the various islands of Great Britain. The West Highland White Terrier appeared in 1907 as the Poltalloch terrier, named after the home of Col. E.D. Malkolm, the first breeder of the short-legged white terriers. The breed was registered as the Roseneath terrier, little Skye and Cairn, till the AKC changed its name to West Highland White Terrier in 1909. Since that time Westies have been the most competitive terriers in the shows.
West Highland White Terriers - Functions
The function of a foxhunter can explain the whole appearance of West Highland White Terriers. They should be compact and rather small to squeeze between the rocks in narrow passages, whereby foxes made their dens. Short legs were helpful in the cramped passages. Strong teeth and jaws were necessary to fight foxes properly within the den. The harsh double coat, especially around the head, protected the Westie from the fox's teeth and sharp stones. The long tail was used to pull the Westie from the holes. Nowadays West Highland White Terriers are still used as hunting dogs, and guard dogs as well family pets.
