West Highland White Terriers - Buying a Puppy

Having decided on buying West Highland White Terriers, especially puppies, don't forget to read as much as possible on the breed. Don't buy puppies before 8 weeks of age. They are difficult to guarantee show quality and may have behavioral problems. Take into consideration that the male and female Westies have different personalities. The males are sturdier and play longer than the females.
It goes without saying that only breeders can provide you with healthy, purebred Westies. Only with a breeder can you see the parents of the West Highland White Terrier puppy and have an idea of what it will look like. If there are no parents available, it means that the person who sells dogs can't be a responsible breeder. Ask the breeder about the food the puppy has been eating and try to continue the schedule. Avoid food containing milk products. Westies like lots of fresh water; so refresh it often. As earth dogs, Westies like to get inside or under things, so they need a crate for a bed. To make the puppy's first nights in your house easier you should put a stuffed toy resembling his littermates near him. Some breeders advise to put a ticking clock near the puppy's bed to stimulate the heartbeats.
Having purchased a purebred puppy you should receive:
- An AKC Registration Certificate, giving the full information on the dog (breed and sex, date of birth, information on the parents, name of the breeder).
- A three-generation pedigree. (If you intend to breed, a five-generation pedigree is preferred.)
- A Veterinarian Health Certificate with the inoculation records.
- Written instructions on feeding.
- A recommendation for local veterinarian familiar with West Highland White Terriers.
