West Highland White Terriers - Care
West Highland White Terriers are very active indoors and outdoors. Their learning rate, obedience and problem solving are extremely high. These dogs need only basic regular training to develop their abilities. Westies need several walks a day if they live in a house and enjoy playing in the yard for the whole day. They like human or canine companionship and are very communicative.
Life Span: over 15 years.
Litter Size: 2-5 puppies.
West Highland White Terriers - Health
Westies are healthy and lively. Diseases are very rare. Among them are: skin allergies, patella luxation, jawbone calcification (lion jaw), deafness, congenial heart disease, and liver diseases.
Faults:
Excess timidity or excess pugnacity.
Any color other than white, heavy wheaten color.
Short, soft coat with tendency to curl.
Over or under height limits.
Small, light colored eyes.
West Highland White Terriers - Grooming
The coat of the West Highland White Terrier needs regular brushing 2-3 times a week and monthly bathing. Also trim around the ears and eyes with blunt-nosed scissors. Pay special attention to the legs and beard brushing. Westies don't shed. Puppies need nail trimming. If you are going to show your pet, continue nail trimming and also pluck and strip the coat. Every 6-8 weeks professional grooming of West Highland White Terriers is advisable.
